If handled correctly, this leads to incredible productivity.
If handled carelessly, it can lead to data leaks, compliance violations, or even national security concerns.
The reason security is so critical now is that AI blurs traditional boundaries. Previously, data stayed inside your organisation’s systems. Now, with AI:
Data may temporarily pass through external providers.
It may be processed in different countries.
It may even be used by a model that doesn’t fully reveal where or how it operates.
This means every organisation must start thinking not only about data access but also about data location, purpose, and ownership.
To understand the risk, let’s first look at how AI systems access data in simple terms.
When you type something into ChatGPT or Claude, your message travels securely over the internet to servers owned by the provider (like OpenAI or Anthropic). The model processes your request, generates an answer, and sends it back.
